Monsters, beasts and other characters are a cornerstone of any good game. Whether these creatures are fully original beings or actual supernatural creatures, they really bring a fantasy world together when done properly. Here’s 10 of the highest rated games by Metacritic, which feature supernatural creatures in one form or another.
10 Undertale - 92
Many games these days strive for utmost originality, and there’s no game as unique and bizarre as Undertale. A touching tale of betrayal, friendship and choices, the game presents itself in a very simple, retro art style. That being said, the story it delivers is so powerful it’s easily one of the best games of the last decade.
Undertale is the story of a young human child who falls into a mountain. Within, monsters have lived for years, sealed away from mankind. There’s tons of unique creatures in the game, many of them inspired by supernatural beings or mythological monsters.
9 Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night - 93
Ah, vampires, some of the most popular supernatural creatures out there. Not only are they a staple on entertainment like movies and TV series, but they’ve also made numerous appearances in popular video games. One of the best examples is no doubt Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.

The main character Alucard is a son of Dracula, who awakens from his sleep at the beginning of the game. Alucard holds incredible power within him: he can shapeshift into a wolf, a bat or even into a mist form. He’s the classic vampire protagonist many other series were inspired by.
8 Okami - 93
Many of the supernatural and even mythological creatures that we know tend to be native to specific cultures. As such, games are a great way to promoting these cultures, and teaching us more about them while also delivering a great story.
Okami is all about traditional Japanese folklore and mythology. Featuring not only deities but also other beasts and creatures native to Japanese culture, Okami allows the player to take control of none other than sun-goddess Amaterasu, tasked with saving the world from darkness.
7 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - 93
Another great game based on mythological creatures from Polish folklore is undoubtedly The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This game introduces so many horrifyingly unique monsters and other enemies, which are all one war or another inspired by Polish culture.

The Witcher puts the player in the boots of Geralt. In true RPG fantasy style, each player can build Geralt’s skill set according to their wants and needs. Throughout their adventures, Geralt will be faced with a variety of daunting enemies, each of which require special preparation to deal with.
6 Divinity: Original Sin II - 94
Many fantasy RPGs tend to have a wide range of supernatural beings, and Divinity: Original Sin II is no different. Not only does the game allow for an extensive amount of character customization, with a choice between dwarf, elf, undead, human or lizard, but it also introduces some really unique and interesting monsters, such as evil scarecrows and giant demons.
The tale of Divinity: Original Sin II is a classic tale of a chosen one, who must help the gods of the world to fight against the dark powers of the Void. In the process, they, and their party, will expand their capabilities in the powerful school of Sourcery.
5 Diablo - 94
For a dark, gothic experience filled with demons and other mythological beings taken from a variety of religions, the first Diablo game truly delivers. There’s no better experience in dark medieval fantasy than this game, even if it’s definitely past its prime in terms of graphics.
The Diablo franchise has always been known for introducing gruesome creatures, from the infamous Butcher demon to all sorts of minor goat critters that hunt the player in the wilderness. In many ways, this is a spiritual precursor to games like The Witcher.
4 God Of War - 94
Another game simply brimming with mythological references and incredibly well-made monsters is God of War. This bloody yet heart-warming tale of a father, Kratos, and a son, Atreus, follows their travels in the wilds, facing off daunting enemies.
Much of this game is inspired by Norse tradition, unlike the previous games in the series that had a clear Greek theme. From dark elves to dwarves to even dragons that are absolutely massive in size, this game definitely doesn’t disappoint when it comes to its beasts.
3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 94
Of course, when it comes to supernatural creatures, no list would ever be complete without Skyrim in it. Bethesda didn’t take any hostages when designing Skyrim and its nordic province, finding inspiration from previous Elder Scrolls games but also giving Skyrim that special touch.

Ghosts, vampires, skeletons, werewolves and even undead draugr all appear in the world of Skyrim, along with dragons, giant spiders and even dwemer machinery. However, an honorable mention definitely goes to enemies like the Wispmother and Hagraven, which were no doubt inspired by actual folklore.
2 The Last Of Us - 95
There’s one supernatural creature that often gets overlooked or simply doesn’t get the kind of attention it deserves. Undead or zombies are a genre of their own, but prior to the release of The Last Of Us, the genre was mediocre at best. However, the story of Ellie and Joe warmed the hearts of countless of players, skyrocketing the genre of zombies back into the top tier of gaming.
The infected enemies in The Last Of Us are the work of some of the best creature design that has been seen in gaming. The Clickers in particular, with their bulbous heads, are a creative yet uniquely horrible type of enemy that only the game of the decade could deliver.
1 Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows Of Amn - 95
Another great precursor to the genre of medieval fantasy, the Baldur’s Gate series has been inspired by classic tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. With that in mind, it’s no wonder it introduces a whole host of supernatural creatures from ogres to trolls and werewolves to wyverns.
While the game itself is pretty old, Shadows of Amn is a must play for anyone looking for a traditional fantasy RPG with tons of mythology and beasts. There’s also a nice variety of different non-beast species like halflings and elves to complete the experience.
