RELATED: Hardest Levels In A Mario Game

But while many signature individuals have continued to appear in multiple entries under the Mario umbrella, some have only appeared in one game. Yet, some of these characters have left enough of an impact that they are remembered for the role they had in making that game special.

10 Cackletta (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)

When it comes to Mario games with rich characters, it is hard to look past the many RPG spin-offs the franchise has had. One notable spin-off series was Mario & Luigi, which had multiple titles on Nintendo’s handheld systems. In the first game, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, a notable and memorable villain rose to the occasion in Cackletta.

Cackletta is a greedy witch who will do anything to get the Beanstar, an artifact that could grant a person with a beautiful voice any wish they want. She then steals Princess Peach’s voice and replaces it with “explosive vocabulary.” She is as evil as any Mario villain has gotten, making her both terrifying yet captivating to see what move she made next.

9 Chuckya (Super Mario 64)

There aren’t many deep storylines in Mario platformers, but there are some memorable characters and enemies. One enemy that surprisingly hasn’t gotten used in any other game is an annoying Bob-omb variant called Chuckya from Super Mario 64.

True to its name, Chuckya will follow Mario, pick him up, and throw him a far distance. They are mostly on high elevated platforms, making it easy for Mario to take fall damage or even fall out of the map. It may be that their frustrating nature may have kept them from being in future titles, but they are memorable for their impact in levels like Wet-Dry World and Tall, Tall Mountain.

8 Bombette (Paper Mario)

The partners in the Paper Mario franchise are a big reason why the series is so beloved. From the original game, one partner that stood out above the rest was Bombette. She is an adorable pink Bob-omb with a fuse that looks like butterfly wings.

Bombette was helpful in navigating the world as she helped blow up walls that were blocking the way to new passages. In addition, she would serve as a great role in battle with different explosive techniques that made a dent into the enemy. Her eagerness to help Mario and her adorable design put her among the best partners in the history of Paper Mario.

7 Cappy (Super Mario Odyssey)

It seems like every Mario 3D platformer has some sort of gimmick tied to it. With Super Mario Odyssey, that gimmick was Cappy. Cappy is an adorable ghost that is looking to rescue his sister who has been taken by Bowser to have her be the tiara for Princess Peach, who has also been kidnaped.

Cappy possesses Mario’s hat, which allows Mario to throw the hat for various purposes. Most notably, Cappy gave Mario the power to possess any creature that he throws a hat at, allowing him to take control of enemies like Goombas or animals like a T-rex. Cappy also serves as a nice traveling buddy throughout the entire journey.

6 Lubba (Super Mario Galaxy 2)

Rosalina was a huge aspect of the original Super Mario Galaxy, with players even given the option to learn bits and pieces of her story through her library. She has since appeared in many other spin-offs. The same can’t be said for her Super Mario Galaxy 2 counterpart, Lubba.

Lubba is a big purple star that wears pants, and his goofy nature may seem like a complete flip from the elegance of Rosalina in the first game. But Lubba is both hilarious and endearing, helping keep Starship Mario in line and keeping the player informed about those who are visiting. He is a delightful addition to the franchise, but has only shown up in cameos since.

5 Mallow (Super Mario RPG)

Before Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi, there was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The game gave Mario fans their first taste of the franchise as a role-playing game and introduced many new characters to the series. That includes Mario’s first partner in the game, Mallow.

Mallow serves as an underdog figure in the story as he was someone who did not have confidence in himself. But his admiration for Mario and the ability to cast spells to take on monsters despite his lack of strength was what helped him become a lovable and reliable member of Mario’s party.

4 FLUDD (Super Mario Sunshine)

Before Cappy served as Mario’s companion in a platformer, there was FLUDD. Appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, FLUDD is a gadget invented by Professor E. Gadd and is used by Mario to clean up Delfino Island after it has been covered in goop.

FLUDD is the only voice-acted partner that Mario has had in any game, serving as an assistant to Mario through the ups and downs of the journey while also being Mario’s main tool to both clean and platform around in the game. FLUDD also has a touching scene near the end of the game that provides one of the rare emotionally-impacting moments in the franchise’s platformers.

3 Wart (Super Mario Bros. 2)

The story of Super Mario Bros. 2 is a weird one considering it is a reworked version of a Nintendo game that didn’t initially have Mario included in it. Therefor, there are plenty of enemies in the game that weren’t originally going to be part of the Mario universe but now were. This includes Wart, the final boss of the game.

Wart may not be notable for his actions in the game’s story, but he is a notable final boss fight considering how unique it is. All the boss fights involved some degree of throwing objects at the boss, but Wart must have his mouth open and have a vegetable thrown into it six times to die. This happens while he attempts to shoot bubbles that get rid of the veggies.

2 Vivian (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)

While there is an amazing roster of partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, none of them are as memorable as Vivian. Initially working with the Shadow Sirens with her two sisters against Mario, their treatment of her eventually leads to her working with Mario and recognizing that he has treated her with more respect than her siblings.

She serves as a great ally to Mario by helping him get out of sticky situations with her shadow ability. She is also notable for being transgender, which was more explicitly stated in international versions of the game as the English version took out almost all mention of her being trans.

1 Geno (Super Mario RPG)

Another character from Super Mario RPG, Geno has left a mark on so many Mario RPG fans that he is one of the most requested characters to appear in Nintendo all-star games such as Super Smash Bros. It is understandable given how cool his role is in his original debut.

Geno’s real name isn’t even Geno as he is actually a warrior of Star Road who has taken possession of a doll that is referred to as Geno. He serves as a confident member of Mario’s party and one of the strongest characters to use in battle largely thanks to his speed. He also has a perfect balance of touching and hilarious moments considering he is learning to use a doll’s body as his own.
