Still, there were a lot of great games added to the service over the year, and as the year comes to an end, it’s worth reflecting on them. From the PS Plus free games for January to the free games for December, here are the best to grace the service this year.

Maneater (PS Plus Free Games for January 2021)
Kicking this off with January was the PS5 version of Maneater, a unique RPG where players take on the role of a shark. Players become hunted as they too hunt, looking for Scaley Pete who is responsible for the death of the player’s mother. By growing and evolving, the player’s shark can change too, including abilities dealing with their own bones, electricity, and more.
GreedFall (PS Plus Free Games for January 2021)
When GreedFall was first released, it was hailed as an honorary Dragon Age title, and that obviously still holds up. It’s a unique RPG set in a fantastical, colonial setting, where players must understand their impact on a new world. There’s plenty of twists and turns, important decisions, fun companions, and potential romances that really hit that BioWare formula, but with a unique approach. For fans of GreedFall, it may be worth keeping an eye on developer Spiders’ upcoming SteelRising, which is a serious deviation but just as unique.
Control: Ultimate Edition (PS Plus Free Games for February 2021)
Control is one of those games that was released as a near-instant classic, and the Ultimate Edition contains the base game and its two DLCs. Using awesome weapons and psychic powers, players must investigate the Oldest House and defeat the Hiss. One of the DLCs connects to Alan Wake, and that building of this interconnected universe is likely one reason Alan Wake 2 was announced at The Game Awards.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS Plus Free Games for March 2021)
Without a doubt, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was one of the biggest events in the gaming industry of the past few years, and now it’s been about everywhere. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available on PS4, on PS5, was made available on PS Plus, and is coming to PC soon, and that’s not to mention its Yuffie DLC. The only major platform it isn’t connected with right now, so it seems, is Xbox. Of course, many fans are still asking where Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is, but hopefully, Square Enix addresses this soon.
Days Gone (PS Plus Free Games for April 2021)
A dark horse PlayStation Exclusive, Days Gone is a fun zombie game with a couple of peculiarities, really just adding more to its charm. It has its diehard fan though, resulting in a cult-like following and really pushing the idea it is underrated. Coming to PS Plus really put another focus on this game, and newcomers and old fans alike really enjoyed the idea of seeing this underrated PlayStation exclusive in one of Sony’s strongest spotlights.

Star Wars: Squadrons (PS Plus Free Games for June 2021)
Star Wars: Squadron is a simple space combat dogfighting game, where players take control of two different squadrons: the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the Galactic Empire’s Titan Squadron. The former is trying to guarantee the success of Project Starhawk, while the latter is trying to destroy it. It also comes with fun, if somewhat repetitive, multiplayer. Ultimately, EA released one small set of DLC but didn’t go further, wanting to release it as a day one package. It’s odd then that this is one game where fans may have wanted more thanks to the sheer design of the base game. Who knows, perhaps one day its popularity will result in a proper Star Wars: Squadrons 2 game as well.
A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS Plus Free Games for July 2021)
A Plague Tale: Innocence is likely one of the most unique games to ever grace PS Plus, but it was also done as a way to build hype for A Plague Tale: Requiem. The latter is currently in development, but the former is described as a stealth action-adventure game set in Aquitane, France during the Hundred Years’ War set in the 14th century. PC Amicia de Rune and her brother Hugo must flee the Inquisition and the Black Plague via stealth, puzzles, and sometimes even horror elements.
Overcooked! All You Can Eat (PS Plus Free Games for September 2021)
Overcooked! All You Can Eat made its PS Plus debut back in September and is a remastered bundle including the first and second cooking simulation game. It promises 4K60FPS, 200+ levels (and a few new ones), 80+ chefs (and a couple of new ones), and so on. Overall, cooking simulators aren’t for everyone, but Overcooked! All You Can Eat is fun regardless, making it a primo pick for PS Plus.
Hitman 2 (PS Plus Free Games for September 2021)
It’s not that Hitman wasn’t always popular, but that the past few years have really pushed it to the next level. Hitman 3 really set the bar, but a lot of that is also thanks to Hitman 2. The second game in the World of Assassination trilogy, Agent 47 hunts down the Shadow Client and his allies as they try to destroy Providence. Overall, as the middle game of a trilogy, it did its job with aplomb and gave PS Plus users a lot of reason to pick up Hitman 3—if they hadn’t already.
Mortal Shell (PS Plus Free Games for December 2021)
Mortal Shell has built more and more of a following since its release in 2020, and PS Plus seems the best place to really push that envelope. A Soulslike action RPG, Mortal Shell puts players into a dark atmosphere filled with environmental storytelling, and they must equip one of four shells (in essence, classes) to survive. Mortal Shell is a great game to play while waiting for Elden Ring, even, and PS Plus makes that even more possible. Mortal Shell isn’t just an appetizer though; it’s a main treat.
PS Plus subscribers get a handful of free games every month.
